Robstown ISD Helps Grieving Students

ROBSTOWN - On Tuesday, the family of Delia, Isaac and Victor Guerrero sifted through the ashes searching for memories of the lives lost in a fire last ngiht.
The boy's father, Sergio, and half brother, Chuy, were able to find a few pictures they could take home. This tragedy didn't just touch the Guerrero family. Classmates of the boys who died are also grieving.
"Well right now it's very hard to say because they are in shock," said the Robstown ISD Head Counselor, Velma Barrera, about the students.
Assemblies were held today at Romero Elementary School and Seale Junior High to help students deal with their grief. Little Victor was in second grade and Issac was in the 7th.
"Yesterday he was in school, and today he's gone. So that would be shock for anybody," said Barrera.
Both grade levels had their own ways of dealing with the loss.
"Our students are little and sometimes, unless they have experienced a loss of someone close to them, they really don't know how to react," said Romero Elementary Principal Sylvia Benavides.
So Benavides sat down his class, then the whole grade and gave them a chance to remember and talk about Victor. And the Junior High did the same thing, but also offered one on one sessions for those who were close to Issac.
"We just allow them to feel what they need to feel. If they're angry, let's feel angry. And let it out," said Barrera.
Both schools are offering counseling services for the next few weeks. To help the little ones find closure, Romero Elementary is creating a space in their library for students to leave pictures or goodbye letters for Victor.
