ROBSTOWN - Since the Coastal Gymnastics Academy in Robstown burned to the ground back in August, the coaches and the students have been waiting to get back in action. After an outpouring of support from the community and even some help from an out of town gym, CGA is opening it's doors once again, in a new location.
As several members of the CGA team watched their gym burn to the ground, many of them thought the doors were closing forever.
With their space gone and little money to put towards rebuilding, the CGA Twisters began to doubt the future of their team. But things began to move forward for CGA.
"Two friends of mine, a husband and wife team out of Sugarland, called me up and said hey, we heard what happened and we want to help you out.," said CGA owner and coach, Phil Salazar.
At first, the friends offered Phil a job at their gym in Sugarland, offering him the same exact pay he made at CGA. But Phil couldn't imagine leaving his team.
"I can't leave my family, you know? It did seem really nice of them, but I told them I can't do that."
Instead, the same couple donated $10,000 dollars worth of gym equipment...at no cost.
"I'm indebted to them for life. Just thinking about it right now gives me goosebumps," Phil said.
And CGA was back in the game.
Finally, after months of hiatus, CGA opened the doors of it's new location at the old Robstown Show Barn.
"I've just been really blessed with a lot of support from a lot of people from all over," said Salazar.
And Phil says the team couldn't be happier.
"The difference, just in their faces, you could see how excited they were and there was like a renewed motivation. Happy to be, they felt at home."
From the ashes, the CGA Twisters are back, and they've got a busy competition season ahead of them.
We're told the Twisters have a competition in San Antonio coming up very soon and even though they're getting a late start, they tell us that they are ready to go. Good luck Twisters!
