CORPUS CHRISTI - The Corpus Christi City Council is expected to vote next week whether to support the funding plans for the Destination Bayfront project.

Hargreaves Associates presented the revised plans today for the sprawling $69 million area along the Corpus Christi bayfront that would be much more than a park. The plan preciously presented to council carried a $73 million dollar price tag.

Phase 1 would include play areas, a lot of landscaping, public restrooms, a pier, parking areas, shade canopies, and retail shops along the area between a Shoreline Boulevard and the seawall. The project requires Shoreline Boulevard to be realigned away from the seawall.

The revised plan has an estimated cost of $53.3 million, plus a projected one million dollars per year to cover operations and maintenance costs. Those operating costs could be covered in part by income from events, rentals, and income from businesses at the location. The plan calls for more than half to be covered by interest from a private endowment.

Destination Bayfront backers want the city to approve a November bond issue asking taxpayers to foot $41 million in construction costs. An estimated $12 million in supplemental funding to build the park would come from leftover bond money. Another $15 million from private donations would go towards operating costs.

If the funding plan is approved, several months of design development would follow before the possibility of issuing bonds goes before the voters in November.

If all goes according to the plan presented to council, construction could start in late 2014 with an opening date in Spring 2016.

The plans for Phase 2 have an estimated cost of $15.7 million. The project calls for further landscaping of Sherrill Park, the additions of a parking plaza on the north side of the site, the extension of a pier to be built during Phase 1 and additional retail shops.
