Rattlers Stop Javelinas Winning Streak At Seven

KINGSVILLE, Texas - After knocking off the first three ranked opponents it faced this season, the 17th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team had its 7-game winning streak ended by 7th-ranked St. Mary's Tuesday in a 10-2 loss at Nolan Ryan Field.

With the loss, the Javelinas fall to 15-4 on the season and are 3-1 against ranked foes. St. Mary's, who Kingsville defeated downed the Rattlers, 9-7 in mid-February, improved to 16-6 on the season with the win.

The Javelinas dug themselves an early hole as the Rattlers struck for four runs in the top of the first off starter Matt Rhodes (3-1). Lead-off hitter Billy Richard, who finished with five hits, singled to start the game, moved to second on sacrifice and scored on base hit by Mario Maldonado.

After Maldonado stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Cash Barker, Brandon Bates singled through the left side to make it 2-0. Bates moved to third when Al Gonzalez reached on a throwing error and crossed the plate on a single by Ivan Sigala. Gonzalez tallied the fourth run on a hit by Adrian Garcia.

After the Rattlers added two more runs in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage, Kingsville put two on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two away, Ben Villafuerte ripped a double to left-center field. Cash Barker and James Black scored on the hit. The inning ended as Trent Wagner was tagged out diving back into third after making a turn towards home.

The Rattlers added a solo home run by Gonzalez in the seventh, and a run in the eighth before adding two in the ninth.

Nathan Humpal (1-0) earned the win in his first start of the season. He allowed two unearned runs on five hits. Greg Dobb pitched three scoreless innings and Jonathan Perez pitched a scoreless ninth.

Rhodes was followed by five Javelinas on the mound. Rhodes allowed five runs with four earned on 10 hits in 3-2/3 innings of work. After Weston Silverburg pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing a run, Taylor Taska went 1-1/3 without giving up a run. Tres Tyler permitted an earned run in an inning of work and Ryan Benitez was charged with an unearned run. Justin Lundgren pitched the ninth allowing a pair of runs.

Kingsville finished with seven hits on the afternoon led by Taska with two, while the Rattlers had 18 led by Richard's five. Derek Moczygemba and Gonzalez each added three hits.

Kingsville opens Lone Star Conference play this weekend as they head to San Angelo to face Angelo State which is ranked 12th in the nation entering the week. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m.

The Javelinas return home next Tuesday to face Texas A&M International.
