SINTON - Some viewers called in to 6 News to tell us they were concerned about the hiring of Sinton's new city Finance Director, Mary Alice Sandoval. They told us they were worried because the new hire didn't have any finance experience.

The way the job was advertised was questioned too, since the city only used one venue, the classified section of the Texas Municipal League website.

But City Manager James Minor, who started in January and only had one month to find a new finance director, says the T.M.L was the best resource to use in the short amount of time he had.

"They advertise for all the cities in Texas that are looking for people, and we were looking for a finance director. That's where we advertised," he says.

Minor says he received five applications, and only two had previous finance experience.

The city told the applicants the pay would be $40,000 a year, and only three were still interested.

The two applicants with finance experience said the pay was too low and withdrew from consideration.

That left only three applicants, two of which were already employed with the city, and Sandoval had three times as many years as anyone else.

"She's been an employee of the city for 18 years, and she really wants to be finance director, there's your choice," Minor says.

Now, the city's previous finance director is being paid to train Sandoval for several weeks until she's ready to take over the job herself, something Minor says would have been done for any new hire.

We tried to talk to Sandoval, but the city told us she was in training and would not let us go back to see what she was doing.

Minor added that the job isn't easy, reminding us that now, Sandoval basically oversees every transaction the city conducts.

"It never stops, and you never get done with it. It's on-going," Minor says.
