CORPUS CHRISTI - A local catholic priest says he's relieved after a jury found him not guilty of assaulting a teenager. The ordeal started for Father Patrick Serna early last year.
A Sinton family came forward accusing him of hitting their son. At the time, the teen was serving as an altar boy at Our Lady of Guadalupe church in Sinton.
Father Serna was later charged with simple assault, a class c misdemeanor.
After 16 months, Serna had his day in court this week and was cleared.
"Having that kind of a cloud over my head, it's been very difficult and I'm just glad that it was unanimous, a jury unanimously said that I was not guilty, so I'm glad that that's on the record," Father Serna told KRIS 6 News.
In a statement, the diocese said the verdict "affirms his innocence and upholds the investigative findings of the diocese."
Father Serna continues his role as pastor with the Our Lady of Guadalupe church in Sinton.
We were not able to speak with the Villarreal family after the hearing.
