CORPUS CHRISTI - The United States Postal Service plans to cut back Saturday mail services starting in August. Spokesmen say the cutbacks will help save billions of dollars.

"It has been around since the beginning...good old Benjamin Franklin got it started," employee Jeff Cathrow reflects. Just one year before the United States was founded Benjamin Franklin was named the first postmaster.

Jeff Cathrow cherishes the service's history and he sees this as the begin of the end. "It is just another phase of the demise of the whole postal service I guess," Jeff Cathrow says sadly.

The USPS has been trying to stay afloat since 2006 when Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act. That is when they had to make payments close to $6 million a year for retiree health benefits.

Six years later, the financial damage has been done. "Now the postal service has been losing close to sixteen billion dollars a year...so they need to find some savings," Congressman Blake Farenthold explains.

Farenthold is now the Chairman of the Postal Committee.

"I am going to be one of the key players in determining how to keep the postal service in the black and keep it from becoming a burden on the tax payers," says Rep. Farenthold.

Their latest resolution was to stop serving letters to residential areas on Saturdays. The only thing that will be delivered are packages and P.O. boxes will receive their mail.

The new rule will take effect in early August and the Post Office will still be open for operations on Saturdays.

"I just hopes it works out for the post office...and they can turn things around", Jeff Cathrow says.
