Possible Game Room Money Seized in Duval County

Authorities Find $50,000, Say It's From Game Rooms

DUVAL COUNTY -- Sheriff's deputies on Thursday said they recovered just under $50,000 in cash during a routine traffic stop, money they said was collected through an illegal gambling operation in San Diego.

The cash, which they said was divided between two tote bags, was found after the driver consented to a search of the vehicle. The five people inside were all arrested, but have since been released, Sheriff Romeo Ramirez said.

Game rooms have not been a problem since September 2012 when Romero issued warnings to all game room operators to comply with the law or voluntarily shut down. Shortly afterward, he said, all six game rooms in the county closed.

The driver and four passengers could face charges of engaging in organized criminal activity, a felony.

Romero said since he believes the money was collected illegally, he has started the process to have it confiscated.
