PORTLAND - Most who knew her will tell you that Elke Smith was simply fun to be around. As a teacher, she inspired the kindergarten students she taught each year at East Cliff Elementary School in Portland. As a wife and mother who spent much of the last five years locked in a battle with cancer, she inspired a community.
Sadly, "Mrs. Smith" lost that battle earlier this month.
She once said, "I will be able to look back at my life's career path and feel like I have done something to make others feel valued and successful." Ask any of her students and they will enthusiastically tell you, she did just that.
The popular former Teacher of the Year will be remembered at a benefit held in her honor for her husband and two boys. It will be at Brewster Street Icehouse this Friday, July 25th from 5 PM to 10 PM. In addition to a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle, there will be various drawings and live music presented by Taylor Tumlinson and Five Card Draw, Smith's favorite band.
Everyone is invited to attend.
