CORPUS CHRISTI - Today, for the first time, the Eagle Ford Consortium Meeting traveled to Corpus Christi. Business professionals from the City of Corpus Christi and surrounding areas shared their plans to take advantage of the opportunities the shale provides.
Expansion of the Eagle Ford Shale means more gas and oil-related companies popping up which (in turn) means more business for the Port of Corpus Christi.
"Right now we've dedicated about 150 acres what we call the Rincon Industrial Channel to focus on Eagle Ford activity," said General Cargo and Information Representative for the Port, Eddie Martinez.
Companies are coming into town and leasing property from the Port so they can capture the new gas and oil product that's coming in from the Eagle Ford Shale. Port of Corpus Christi crews are clearing that land for those companies looking to move in.
The land is just over the Harbor Bridge to the left and is called the Rincon Industrial Park. The Port is leasing the land to oil and gas-based businesses that probably wouldn't build in Corpus Christi if it weren't for the Eagle Ford Shale.
Aside from the port leasing the 150 acres of land, Eddie Martinez said this is all just the beginning.
"We anticipate a lot more cargo coming through whether it's coming in by ship, coming in by rail," he said, "Which is why The Port is investing in the infrastructure today to accommodate for tomorrow's cargoes."
Port Commissioner Richard Borchard said, "now, instead of importing, we're exporting these two valuable products: natural gas and petrolium products."
Companies are investing billions of dollars in The Port and that means one main thing for people in South Texas.
"We're talking about jobs," Borchard said, "We're talking about high-paying jobs for our people."
