PORT ARANSAS - "The whole place that is empty behind us will be jam packed with people and there is a lot of drinking and loud music...and...",Cori Smith, a visitor from San Antonio explains is the reason she is with her kids today to celebrate spring break early in Port Aransas.
With half a million spring breakers expected to pour into town next week, the Port Aransas police chief says sound waves will be crashing on the beach.
"Last year we had several different groups come in in what we call mobile discos for a lack of a better term," Scott Burroughs, Police Chief of Port Aransas remembers.
The ferry is just one example of how the huge crowds, drawn to the loud music, back up traffic in the city.
A ferry ride to get to the city can take minutes. But once spring break comes around, it gets jam packed...slowing down ferry rides to almost hours.
That is exactly what the city is trying to avoid with the new ordinance.
But this year a new ordinance is in place that says kids cannot play music louder than 85 decibels from noon to 10 p-m and not over to 70 decibels the rest of the time. If they do it can cost them $500.
The city manager says the new ordinance was put in place last month- just in time for spring break.
"Again it is all generally complaint driven. If there is no problem there is no problem. If we start having problems with groups this is another tool we can use to help keep the peace," Scott Burroughs, Police Chief of Port Aransas says.
For now, families like the Smiths can an enjoy the silence for a few more days.
"We come all the time, we like to come often. We just don't come during spring break," Cori Smith says.
