PORT ARANSAS -- The playground at the elementary school is more dangerous than fun. Nearly every part of it is sprinkled with rust, and some of it is even falling apart. The running track is also crumbling, and the more than 30-year-old AC unit is starting to show its age.
"There were handles here , and my maintenance director came out here very recently and just tugged on one, and they are no more." Superintendent Sharon Doughty said as she pointed to a playground handle bar that had fallen off.
Doughty said a $3.5 million bond the school board has put on a May 11 ballot will help repair the playground and other school property that is ravaged by rust. She said the district dipped into its emergency fund a few years ago to repair building facades, but said the district can no longer afford to take from the fund that is reserved for a hurricane disaster.
A benefit of asking taxpayers for the money through a bond, Doughty said, is that the repairs will cost less than they would if they were paid for with tax dollars. Port Aransas, she said, gives 75 percent of every tax dollar to the state, making purchases cost four times the usual amount.
"We do not host track meets. We do practice, but there are certain spots that we avoid," Doughty said as she picked up a piece of asphalt that had broken apart from the track.
The high school's heating and ventilation unit, purchased in 1979, is nearly covered in rust, and is so old is periodically malfunctions, causing the high school to go without air conditioning.
The school board met Wednesday night to continue discussing the bond.
