ALICE - It did not take long after a SWAT team got into position for an Alice police officer to surrender on charges he murdered his common law wife.
Alice Police Chief Danny Bueno says one of his officers was in constant contact with officer Joe Gonzalez on the phone during the standoff.
The effort was focused on making sure Gonzales' 8-year-old son was safe inside the home and would be released safely.
Neighbors say Gonzales opened the door for the boy, allowing him to walk out the front door with a rolling suitcase. The boy is now in the custody of his grandparents.
The suspect surrendered shortly afterwards. He lifted up his shirt to let fellow officers know that he was no longer armed.
Investigators say they still have not found the gun Gonzales is accused of using to shoot his common law wife multiple times at a home in Corpus Christi.
We're told Gonzales forced his way into the mobile home, chased Leslie Morin to a back bedroom and shot her.
Witnesses say he was in his police uniform and left the area with his son in a Chevy pickup.
More than 3 hours later police blocked off access in the neighborhood where Gonzales lives as they worked to have him surrender peacefully.
Investigators are not releasing any details on a possible motive for the murder.
At the time of the shooting, Morin was with several family members who had just celebrated her birthday over the weekend.
