Police: Prisoner Fakes Illness, Manages to Escape Patrol Car

CORPUS CHRISTI - A young man already headed to jail on an assault charge managed to escape from a police car and run to a city park this afternoon.

Police say the trouble started when Javier Garcia, 18, had managed to slip his cuffs to the front of his body. He then told the officer he was not feeling well.

The officer rolled down the window which allowed Garcia to reach out and pull on the door handle. Police say Garcia took off running from Lipan over to Blucher Park where he tried to hide in the brush.

The officer transporting Garcia got out of his car, but forgot to put in in park, so it rolled into a utility pole. No major damage was done to the patrol unit or the pole.

Several officers on foot and motorcycles converged on the park to find Garcia. He's now facing an additional charge for escape.
