ROBSTOWN - Law enforcement has never been a safe profession. Now, a new report shows the number of officers killed in the line of duty this year is higher than it's been in decades. Officers and their leaders are constantly taking measures "to be safe out there."
Robstown Police Lieutenant Joe Guerra says, he thinks a rising number of suspects seem to be prepared to fight back if they have a run-in with police.
"We see more people carrying guns these days and it seems like they're not afraid to use these weapons. Right now, we're sending all of our officers through, it's called an active shooter's training and it involves these air guns that they shoot at each other, to make it as real as possible," Lt. Guerra.
A recent report from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, shows that 63 officers across the country died on the job since June of last year.
That's almost twice as many as in the previous 12 months. Most of those deaths are caused by gun violence. Police want to make sure there is strength in numbers when responding to a call.
"We try to keep as many officers on the scene as possible that way it reduces the chances of an officer getting hurt," Lt. Guerra said.
Robstown P.D. also looked into new protective gear for officers.
"It's an outside vest, it goes outside the uniform but looks just like a uniform and it does protect against being shot with a taser," Lt. Guerra said.
Lt. Guerra says, while the new national statistics are alarming, he's thankful, there hasn't been an officer-involved shooting death, during the time he's been behind the badge in Robstown.
