Police Officer Checking Drivers' Speed, Hit, Killed by Tractor Trailer

NEW JERSEY - A tractor trailer accident leaves one police officer dead and traffic backed up for miles.

It happened early this morning in Waldwick, New Jersey.

That's about 30 miles northwest of New York City.

Authorities say a police officer, monitoring drivers' speed with a radar gun, was sitting in his car when he was struck by the tractor trailer.

The accident caused a huge backup on the roadway as officials surveyed the scene.

The identity of the officer has not been released, but officials say the victim was a five-year veteran of the Waldwick Police Department,

The accident and the fatality are both under investigation.
