CORPUS CHRISTI - Police Chief Floyd Simpson is asking drivers of Corpus Christi to do their part in stopping an epidemic of hit and run drivers.
According to Simpson, there's been 1,026 hit and runs from since January. At least 100 of those crashes involved people on foot or riding bicycles. He says 14 people have died as a result of hit and run drivers this year.
Chief Simpson says his men and women are out on the streets writing up to 1,100 tickets a month. But his police force can only do so much.
"We are begging the community to stop it. Just stop it," said Chief Simpson. "drivers who are plowing people over, not stopping to render aid, texting, doing all sorts of things in cars rather than driving."
