Police Chief Says Unsolved Murder Case is Not Cold

PORTLAND -- The only unsolved murder in the city of Portland is reaching the 2 year anniversary on Sunday.

But, the police chief there says the case is not cold and they continue following leads there every day.

"We will not give up until this is solved," Chief Gary Giles told us as the 2nd anniversary of the shooting approached.

There's been no arrest, no suspect named and a person of interest who police will not identify.

They've issued two composite sketches, with help from surviving victim Kristene Chapa, who is still trying to recover from being shot in the head.

Police released their first sketch July 4th 2012 and a second one that followed just 9 days later, when Kristene, recovering from a brain injury, wanted to try again.

Chief Giles says both sketches are still part of their case and both are still generating leads.

"We still have active leads that we follow on a regular basis, this is not a cold case by any means," Giles said.

The Texas Rangers and FBI are also working on the case.

Meanwhile, Kristene works on recovering from the the gunshots that killed the one she loved.

"It's hard, I carry the scars around and what's wrong with my body, I know, that that's the reason I'm this way," Chapa said.

Chief Giles says his officers are motivated to one day bring justice for Molly and Kristene.

"We still have active leads that we follow on a regular basis, this is not a cold case by any means," Giles said.

Kristene is now writing a book about her experience and learning to live with the loss of Molly while working on recovering from nearly dying.

"I'm very grateful I'm still here," Chapa told us, "it actually made my family closer together, me almost dying and stuff, it's hard."

Chief Giles says while there is one person who the clues are pointing to as a person of interest, investigators are also exploring other possibilities.

He does say that person is not a threat to the community, but they have not released his identity.
