Police Chief Resigned Because he Expected to be Fired

ALICE - Former Alice Police Chief Randy Weems says he saw the writing on the wall when the city manager was recently let go, so he decided it was time to make plans for his own future.

Weems had expected to address the media about his resignation from inside the city's public safety center. Instead he was out on the sidewalk this morning.

He started his comments today by remarking that "this is the safest our city has been thanks to our citizens." Weems took office one year and one month ago. He has 28 years of law enforcement experience.

In preparation for a possible firing, Weems had already moved his family back to Arizona and put his house in Jim Wells County up for sale. He's moving back to take a consulting job.

Yesterday, he handed in a letter of resignation and a timeline that included a final day of June 1st. Later in the day, the interim city manager told him to clean out his desk immediately.
