CORPUS CHRISTI - The city council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that will mean more hiring by the Corpus Christi Police Department.
Under the ordinance that passed a first reading today, the department will use a $430,000 from the Crime Control District Fund to hire five new officers immediately.
The ordinance would also allow the department to recruit cadets for the academy all year instead of just in January.
The cadet class would also increase from fifteen to twenty.
Police Chief Floyd Simpson says he needs a larger cadet class because not all recruits make it through training.
A final vote on the ordinance will take place next Tuesday.
