Planned Spaceport in Brownsville Could Impact Coastal Bend

CORPUS CHRISTI -- In the next few years, Boca Chica Beach near Brownsville could be transformed into a launch pad for commercial space ships.

The announcement came last week from SpaceX founder Elon Musk, but the impacts could be felt right here in the Coastal Bend, too.

"(Commercial space flight) is coming, and it will need other industries to support it," said David Hudgins, an assistant economics professor at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. "So just having a launch pad is not going to stop there."

Hudgins explained that when one business makes its home here, others follow to support it.

"The service industry..the banking industry..agricultural industry; there's a give and a take. Overall the space industry is a growing industry."

Hudgins said growing businesses are good to have anywhere in South Texas, and that commercial space travel has nowhere to go but up.
