KINGSVILLE, Texas - Senior Zachary Pettiford threw his second complete game of the season on Saturday in a must-win contest in the NCAA South Central Regional at Nolan Ryan Field as the Texas A&M-Kingsville advanced with a 3-0 win over nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa.
With the win, Javelinas (41-17) avoid elimination and advance to a 7 p.m. meeting Saturday night with St. Edward's. Colorado Mesa is eliminated and finishes the season 45-11.
Pettiford scattered eight hits and allowed just two runners to advance into scoring position in the contest. He struck out six hitters and walked none as he improved to 5-3 on an efficient 99 pitches. It was a Javelina record tenth shutout of the season.
Kingsville struck for two runs in the bottom of the second as the bottom portion of the order provided all the offense.
With one away, James Black hit a single to right followed by a hard grounder off the bat of Matt Perez toward short that took a Javelina bounce past Nate Robertson for a hit. Travis Laird rifled a shot to right-center field for a double driving in Black. Perez raced home on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Guedry.
Kingsville rallied for a run with two outs in the fourth. Perez's double to the wall in left-center field. After Laird walked, Guedry looped a single to right field driving in Perez for the 3-0 advantage.
Kyle Davis suffered the loss for the Mavericks following to 8-1 on the season. He allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Cody Lehman pitched two innings of 1-hit relief.
