Peter Nagy Makes History As First Islander Selected for NCAA Singles Tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team got a program first on Wednesday afternoon when Peter Nagy was selected as one of 64 participants in singles portion of the NCAA Championships.

"We're extremely proud of Peter," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I cannot tell you how hard this young man has worked and how much he has improved in one year's time. I can honestly say that I'm not sure any player has ever improved in the course of a year more than Peter, and we've had a lot of guys improve."

Nagy, a native of Budapest, Hungary, has lost just three matches between the fall and spring seasons, going 16-2 in dual matches this season, and losing just once during the fall at the ITA Texas Regionals. He won the Marco & Co. Islanders Open and the Rice Galleria Fall Invite, both ITA-sanctioned events, while reaching the Round of 16 at the ITA tournament.

"He is so extremely coachable and really listens," said Moore. "He shows up and does extra work everyday on his own. He is an absolute joy to coach. Peter has determination and drive that are rare and special, he does all the things you appreciate as a coach."

Nagy's most recent win put his team on the brink of clinching the Southland Conference tournament, giving his team a 3-2 lead in a match that they would win by a 4-2 final. He did not lose a set to a Southland Conference opponent during the regular season, and he last lost a singles match on Feb. 21 against Texas.

"I can tell you one thing for certain, Peter's work ethic was contagious in a positive way to this team," said Moore. "You can't witness a guy work as hard as Peter Nagy, and not be challenged to work hard yourself."

He will lead his team into the NCAA Championships on May 10 against that same Texas team, with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi a No. 3 seed in the College Station Regional hosted by Texas A&M. The Islanders will face Texas in the first round, while Texas A&M takes on Marist. The winners of the two matches will meet the next day to decide the winner of the regional and the participant in the final 16 that will take place in Urbana, Ill. starting May 19.

Nagy was an automatic qualifier from the Southland Conference after winning the conference championship at No. 1 singles and being ranked in the top 125 singles players in the nation. He is currently ranked No. 97 in the nation, with Nagy set to move up in the new singles rankings that will be released on Thursday afternoon.

"I think it's a great honor to have our schools name in such a highly prestigious event," said Moore. "We're extremely excited about Islander Peter Nagy competing in the NCAA Tennis Championships."

The individual singles and doubles competition is slated to start the week after the completion of the team championships at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of Illinois. Pairings for the event will be released at a later date.
