CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team had a historic weekend in the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions, with sophomore Peter Nagy being a big part of the success enjoyed on the way to the teams first ever title in the event. The Southland Conference honored Nagy as its Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, earning the third conference nod for an Islanders men's player this season after he was co-player earlier this season and Guillaume Rauseo won it last week.

Nagy had a stellar week, beating two ranked opponents in singles action, and three total, while helping the team to wins in all four matches played. In the opener of the HEB, Nagy made quick work of No. 47-ranked singles player Patrick Kawka, winning 6-1, 6-2 as part of the Islanders 4-2 win over No. 30 BYU. He picked up a 6-1, 6-3 final at No. 1 singles against Louisiana - Lafayette to send the team to the finals of the tournament.

In the title match, Nagy helped the Islanders cause by earning a 6-2, 7-5 final over No. 92 Ben Davis of Middle Tennessee as the home team took home the crown.

Nagy was also up a set on No. 60 Daniel Leitner of South Alabama when Texas A&M - Corpus Christi clinched the match by a 4-0 final.

He teamed with Odon Barta in doubles action to go 2-1 on the week, suffering only an 8-4 loss against the No. 50-ranked team of Kawka and Francis Sargeant of BYU. The duo picked up wins against Middle Tennessee, and earned the deciding match for the doubles point against South Alabama.

Next up for Nagy and the Islanders will be a match on Friday at 1 p.m. in Beaumont against Florida A&M. The two teams will play a neutral site contest at the Thompson Family Tennis Courts on the campus of Lamar.
