CORPUS CHRISTI - It's day two of testimony in the trial of Jose Franco III and Amanda Gonzales on charges they abused their 12-year-old son.
This morning, a pediatrician from Coastal Bend Emergency Service, office inside Drsicoll Children's Hospital, testified that the boy showed signs of starvation and hand beatings. The pediatrician testified the boy would have died if he hadn't received medical care.
Cops arrested Franco and Gonzales last May when a family member came forward with disturbing claims that the boy was forced to wear a diaper, endured physical beatings on a regular basis, and was forced to stand for long periods of time.
During opening statements, state prosecutor Brittany Jensen told jurors the abuse from the couple was a result of allegations the boy molested his younger sister. But the couple's defense attorneys told jurors the child had behavioral issues, at one point hospitalized for schizophrenia following molestation allegations.
