CORPUS CHRISTI - Pat Suter, 87, surrendered at the Nueces County Sheriff's Office this evening on a charge of causing an accident that resulted in serious bodily injury. Suter's accused of hitting a bicyclist hit on Ocean Drive and not stopping to check him earlier this month.
District Attorney Mark Skurka says she will be held on a $50,000 bond. The family attorney says she will be bonded out today.
Suter told us she had nothing to say about the incident herself while walking with her attorney to the Sheriff's Office. She stated, "perhaps after tomorrow."
The family attorney, Mark Di Carlo, says Suter is 'very apologetic' about the accident, but there are some extenuating circumstances in the case, like her age. He continued by saying she thought she hit a trash can, not a person.
Last week, police impounded Suter's 2012 Ford Focus from outside her home. The car had damage to the front passenger side of the vehicle that matched damage police expected from the car that hit attorney Richard Leshin as he pedaled down Ocean Drive a few days prior.
Leshin said he only heard a car behind him before being knocked to the ground. He was taken to the hospital with two broken vertebrae and a broken ankle.
The 87-year-old Suter is a well known environmental activist. The Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge on Ennis Joslin is named after her and her late husband.
Her family told us on the day the car was impounded that they were cooperating fully with police.
