LOS ANGELES - A Massachusetts man is charged after authorities say he was traveling from Los Angeles International Airport, back to Boston with a suitcase full of weapons.
28-year-old Youngda Huang Harris was recently arrested during a layover on a trip from Japan. U.S. customs officers noticed Harris was wearing a bulletproof vest and flame-resistant pants under his trenchcoat, which triggered a Homeland Security investigation.
A search of his checked luggage revealed several suspicious items including: a smoke grenade, knives, body bags, a hatchet, a collapsible baton, a gas mask, billy clubs, handcuffs, leg irons, and a device to repel dogs.
Harris is charged with one count of transporting hazardous materials, as smoke grenades are prohibited on board passenger aircraft. If convicted, Harris could face a fine up to $25,000 in fines and five years in prison.
Authorities are trying to understand why Harris had the suitcase full of weapons, but say he's not cooperating.
