Part Of Beachwalk Closed Due To Erosion

CORPUS CHRISTI - Part of the new beachwalk on North Beach is closed this week, due to beach erosion, and it will not be re-opened in time for the busiest weekend of the year.

Over the past few weeks, high tides have washed away at the sand adjacent to the pavement, and now the water is eroding away the beachwalk pavement itself.

As a result, the pavement is leaning and cracking.

Over the weekend, city leaders ordered a 150-foot section fenced off and closed to pedestrians near the USS Lexington, due to safety concerns.

Monday, they said it's unlikely they can come up with a solution to get it open by the July 4th holiday.

The beachwalk was built in two phases, funded by separate bond elections in 2004 and in 2008, but aside from the millions of dollars it took to build, little has been done to protect it.

District 1 City Councilman Kelley Allen said they are looking for a short term solution, but also applying for a matching grant from the Texas General Land office to fund a long term protection plan.

"We have applied to the General Land Office for some funding. We're coming up with that portion of it through our own city council and our budgeting. I've talked to (City Manager) Ron Olson about that. We're going to need probably $500,000 to $700,000 on our part," he says.

North Beach Community Association president Carrie Robertson, who intends to run against Allen in the November election, says she has contacted city officials for months about the erosion problem, but nothing was ever done.

She questions whether the city can afford to wait for that state grant money to save the stretch of the beachwalk that is now surrounded by fencing.
