Parents Accused of Abusing Infant, Giving her Cocaine

MATHIS - A mother and father sit in the San Patricio County Jail on charges they abused their 5-month-old daughter and gave her cocaine to make her stop crying. Mathis police say they've never seen a case like this before.

The infant was recenly taken to the hospital with severe facial bruising, dried blood on her forehead and lips, and testing found she had cocaine in her system.

We're told Sofia Benavidez and her boyfriend, Eddy Echavarria Longoria, claim the girl fell off the couch and landed on a video game controller.

The investigator says that just doesn't make any sense. Doctors found evidence of previous injuries, including fractured toes and bruising.

Police say it was Longoria who gave the baby girl cocaine.

The mother and father are charged with injury to a child and lying to police. Their bonds are set at $40,000.

Child Protective Services is also working on taking custody of three other children at the home.
