CORPUS CHRISTI - Two members of the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Track & Field Team will head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the NCAA West Preliminaries, which are set to begin Thursday at John McDonnell Field.
The two Islanders making the trek are Angelo Garland on the men's side and Ebony Collins for the women, both qualifying after strong performances in the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships two weeks ago.
Garland qualified in the 400-meter dash and will run his first race at 7:20 p.m. Thursday and will run the following day at 6 p.m. if he qualifies from the first round. Collins is set to participate in the first round of the 100-meters just before Garland at 6:55 p.m. Thursday and will then run at 6:45 p.m. the following day if she advances to the quarterfinals.
During the Championships, Garland posted one of the highest finishes among all the Islanders, as he made the podium by finishing third in the 400. After already setting the school record in the event twice during the regular season becoming the first Islander to run a sub-48 second race, the freshman shaved a full second off his fastest time during the finals at the Championships by clocking a time of 46.82 to earn the silver medal. This mark gives him the 30th fastest qualifying mark in the west region.
The native of Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, also just missed out on qualifying with his Southland Championship 4x400-meter relay team, as he ran the anchor leg of the event to earn gold with a time of 3:10.03, just .01 seconds behind the final team to qualify.
Collins also was a runner who continued to improve as the season went along, running the best 100m time of her collegiate career during the finals of the event during the Southland Championships, as she clocked a time of 11.72 to finish sixth amongst conference foes. This time gave the sophomore the third quickest in school history - just a tenth of a second off the school record - and qualified her in 41st going into the regionals.
Fans can keep track of how the duo does during the meet by keeping track of live results or live video. Links to those can be found above. Results will also be posted on the team's social media outlets on Twitter (@IslandersTFXC) and Facebook (Texas A&M Corpus Christi Track & Field/Cross Country).
