Overnight Fire Destroys Home on Airline Road

CORPUS CHRISTI - An overnight fire has left one Corpus Christi couple homeless after flames ripped through their home. The fire broke out around 11:30 Wednesday night on the 3700 block of Airline Road.
A once two story home is nothing but charred wood after a fire broke out destroying the entire home. Large flames shot out of the roof and quickly took over the entire home after the roof collapsed. Thursday morning fire crews sifted through layers of debris looking for a cause of the fire, which they now believe was started from a pile of trash near the garage and possibly a cigarette.
Neighbor William Hahn says the commotion woke him and his wife up. "Well the dogs woke me up and they were playing on the bed. I looked out and I saw fire coming out from the over head door," says Hahn.
Fighting the fire posed a challenge for firemen due to the road construction in the area. "My understanding is that they had an issue with water, one of the main issues was access because of the unpaved roads," says Captain James Brown of the Corpus Christi Fire Department.
He says one of the four trucks that responded got stuck in mud created from water running on to the unpaved road. Captain Brown says the resident tried to extinguish the fire on her own before calling 911. And that's something he says never to do.
Both who lived at the home managed to get out unharmed. One of the homeowners told Hahn's wife that it was his dog Blackie who woke him up and alerted the couple about the fire.
The couple is getting assistance from the Red Cross tonight they'll be staying at a hotel.
