CORPUS CHRISTI - The CCPD works hard to keep drivers and pedestrians safe.
Part of that included passing a distracted driving ordinance to keep drivers from using cell phones behind the wheel.
With more than 1,200 tickets issued so far, many locals have learned the hard way. But so have some out-of-towners who may not have been aware they were breaking the law.
Tom Drake lives in Dallas. He makes regular business trips to Corpus Christi. He didn't know about the ban. "How long has that been in affect?," asked Drake.
Those who live in or near Corpus Christi are familiar with the ban. But what about people from out of town? With no signs posted warning about the cell phone ordinance, how are out-of-towners supposed to know it's illegal to use a cell phone behind the wheel?
According to CCPD Capt. Mark Gutierrez, the city is working to make all drivers more aware. "We are actually having signs made that will be put on different roadways as you enter the city."
New signs will be good to have but it's a little too late for the couple hundred out-of-towners who've already been fined.
So, with no visible warning, is it fair to give out-of-towners a ticket? The CCPD says -- yes. But officers try to be lenient .. when they can be.
"There are different factors that are taken into account," said Capt. Gutierrez, "but if you have someone who almost caused an accident because of a cell phone, you're probably not going to give them a break."
So, whether you're from the Sparkling City by the Sea or just passing through, the law is the law... and it's your responsibility to know it.
