ALICE -- An undercover operation involving several law enforcement agencies has led to 60 arrests in Alice and other parts of Jim Wells County. Officers also seized more than 37,000 dollars in cash along with drugs and weapons. Residents living in the targeted neighborhoods are on edge after the three day round-up netted dozens of criminals living close by.

"I'm afraid because I don't want for them to come into my house because I live by myself," a woman said.

Some of the arrests were made at a government housing complex, but most neighbors hid behind there screen doors when they learned of the weekend arrests.
"There's a lot of things going on here," she added.

Criminals, cash, drugs and weapons were all seized as part of "Operation Unified Alliance" a continued effort by several law enforcement agencies to combat criminal activity. Most of the people arrested are still behind bars. Police Chief Daniel Bueno said, this is a prime example of the no tolerance policy the City of Alice and Jim Wells County have for criminal behavior.

Officials wouldn't confirm which of the 58 criminals were directly involved with gang activity, just that none of them are welcome in Alice. They did confirm that the lion's share of the cash seized came from Clemente Lopez, 25 who was arrested for money laundering.

Meanwhile, residents living in the complex were surprised to hear about the high level of crime lurking on their very doorsteps. While some are afraid, others refuse to be intimidated by these criminals.

"No I'm not scared, but I have to be careful. I don't scare. I'm a very brave person," a resident said.

Cheif Bueno said, this is the third sweep in the past few months, and it won't be the last.
