CORPUS CHRISTI - We have an update on San Patricio County Sheriff Leroy Moody's efforts to shut down illegal game rooms. Last Thursday was the deadline he issued for illegal operators to shut down.
About 40 game rooms were warned and less than a week later, only one remains open. That's because the Pot of Gold game room in Sinton is doing things differently.
Owner Sylvia Garza says she's proud and glad to be open. They give away point cards which customers use to play instead of putting cash in the machines.
Even though customers aren't winning any money Garza says they play because money has nothing to do with it all.
"If they're true gamblers they just want to play. They don't care how they get paid. They don't care if they win or lose," Garza said.
People just don't stop by the Pot of Gold for gambling, they also stop by for the pot of menudo. The owner serves it here every Sunday morning.
"We have a lot of people that come to get away from home. They don't have anybody at home. They're just sitting there doing nothing," Garza said.
For her, doing things the right way is paying off and she says the other game room owners could do the same thing.
"I mean just comply with the sheriff's rules and open back up," said Garza.
Until then, her game room is the only one that's open in the county and she's not complaining.
