CORPUS CHRISTI -- The only doctor who performs abortions in the Coastal Bend is retiring.
The decision seems to mark the end of an era in the years of controversy between pro-life protestors and Dr. Eduardo Aquino of the Coastal Birth Control Center.
But there are still some unanswered questions, including the reason why Dr. Aquino decided to retire.
Though a representative from the clinic confirmed Dr. Aquino is stepping down, it's still not clear whether the clinic will officially close--or when.
We reached out to Dr. Aquino for a comment, but his office declined an on-camera interview and calls to his office in San Antonio were not immediately returned.
There was one man pacing outside the clinic this morning with a rosary.
He explained that he was there to pray, and to thank God that the doctor is leaving.
Local Pastor Daniel Sem, another pro-life activist, reacted similarly and explained that he was in disbelief when he heard the news of Dr. Aquinos retirement.
"We're just rejoicing to see that this has actually come to pass," Sem said. "It's almost too good for us to believe."
A worker from the Coastal Birth Center said Dr. Aquino has already stopped seeing patients locally.
He still works with another clinic in San Antonio, though it's unclear if he'll stop working there too.
San Antonio will now be the only city in South Texas to offer abortion services.
