CORPUS CHRISTI -- The second capital murder trial for Carlos Gonzalez began Thursday. Gonzales is charged in the brutal beating of Victor Morales at a home on Westchester in 2007. Emotional testimony came from the victim's common law wife, Tracy Romero.
"I saw the blood when we were over his body," Tracy said.
She testified for the second time about the gut wrenching site of her dead husband of 16 years.
"Victor's dead, Victor's dead and she's like what, what are you talking about and I just hung up," Tracy said. "My cousin called me and I told her Victor's dead I need help what do I do and she's like call 911."
She struggled on the stand while reliving the graphic details of the footsteps she took toward her husbands lifeless body on the living room floor.
"When I put my stuff on the sofa is when I saw his legs and saw him there," Tracy said.
Pictures of the crime scene taken by CCPD of the blood stained floor and broken furniture were shown in court as evidence. Defense attorney's for Gonzales are trying to get a lesser charge because they said he didn't intentionally try to kill him.
However, the medical examiner said Morales died from blunt force trauma to the head, he suffered a skull fracture and his throat was crushed.
If found guilty of capital murder, Gonzales can get up to life in prison. Testimony continues Friday.
