CORPUS CHRISTI - Here's another reminder never to leave your vehicle running for what you think will be a quick trip inside a store.
Yesterday afternoon a Flour Bluff woman told police she just went in to grab some cigarettes at a convenience store at Waldron and S.P.I.D. when someone drove off in her 2006 Hummer H3.
A quick check of store surveillance video allowed the officer to easily recognize the suspect as a man he had spoken to just minutes earlier during a disturbance call.
Officers were told to be on the lookout for 22-year-old Wesley Lavender cruising around town in the H3. He's had numerous previous run-ins with police for robbery and drug offenses, so they knew who they were looking for.
Police were unable to find Lavender during a check of relatives' homes in the Flour Bluff area. Several hours later an officer spotted the stolen H3 at the Sun Suites on Oakhurst.
Three officers went to the room where Lavender was staying and found him taking a shower. He's now charged with auto theft.
