CORPUS CHRISTI - There are around 200 registered sex offenders on probation here in the Coastal Bend and right up until Halloween, corrections department officials are making rounds checking up on those offenders.

Probation Officer Arterry Cooper said, "Some already be cool about it. They understand we got to do our job and some just don't like it."

A group of officers drive door-to-door to make sure everyone's obeying their probation requirements.
William Shull, Corrections Department Supervisor said, "They're checking to make sure they don't have any decorations; Halloween decorations on the porch, on the front lawn, on the side of the house."

The purpose is to force kids to actually stay away from certain houses on Halloween night. Shull said, "This is just something extra we're doing."

While the corrections department leaves a pink slip on the door letting the sex offenders know they stopped by, they're also handing out orange ones to the community to let people know there are sex offenders in their neighborhood.

About 60 sex offenders are considered "high risk" and will spend Halloween night in a counseling session or watching an informational movie. As for the others, Shull says the lights should be off, the gate should be closed and there should be no indication candy will be given out.

Sex offenders are visited three to four times a month by their probation officer so the "no decoration" rule shouldn't be a surprise. If the offender happens to violate the probation terms, however, he or she could face anything from a more strict probation to more jail time pending the seriousness of the violation.

All of this to ensure a safe Halloween for all trick-or-treaters.
