Off-Duty Border Patrol Agent Killed During Fishing Trip

RAYMONDVILLE - An off-duty Border Patrol agent from Kingsville was shot and killed in front of his family this week. Authorities say two men from from Mexico tried to rob Javier Vega Junior and his father while they were out on a fishing trip.

Vega pulled out a weapon when confronted, but he was shot in the chest. His father was shot in the hip.

A family member loaded everyone up into a car and took off towards a hospital, but Vega did not survive.

Police later caught up with the suspects, 40-year old Ismael Hernandez and 30-year old Gustavo Tijerina, near Sebastian. Both were found hiding in a shed.

The suspects are being held without bond on charges of capital murder and robbery.

The Department of Homeland Security says Javier Vega Junior was a Marine Corpse veteran and has served with the Border Patrol for 6 years.
