FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A Tarrant County couple were arrested on animal cruelty charges after authorities say three puppies were found dead and burned in a barrel over the weekend.
Thirty-eight-year-old Melissa Woodard and 33-year-old Christoper Apala were arrested Saturday at their northwest Tarrant County home. The two remained in Tarrant County Jail Tuesday on $15,000 bond each.
In a jailhouse interview, Apala told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/14uIkNN ) he found the puppies suffering Saturday and decided the "humane" thing to do was to kill them, hitting each one time in the head with a stick and burning them.
In a separate interview, Woodard denied that she killed the mix miniature pinschers. She says she and Apala had no food for the starving puppies and had no vehicle to take them to a shelter.
