North, South Korea Exchange Fire

SOUTH KOREA - North and South Korea exchanged artillery fire today into each other's waters.

Pyongyang had earlier announced it would conduct live fire exercises in seven areas North of a disputed maritime border.

A South Korean Defense Ministry Spokesman said the North fired more than 500 artillery rounds during the drill and about 100 of them landed in waters South of the disputed boundary.

He said the South responded by firing more than 300 artillery rounds into the water north of what's known as the Northern limit line.

No land targets were hit by either side, though South Koreans living on islands near the front line were sent into shelters.
