PYONGYANG -- North Korea claims it successfully launched a rocket.
North Korean television reported the rocket was designed to put a weather satellite into space, but the United States says this was a test of technology that could one day deliver a nuclear warhead capable of hitting U.S.targets.
South Korea's defense ministry spokesman said the first stage of the rocket fell into the Yellow Sea and the rocket then flew over a South Korean island near the North Korean border.
