North Beach Complex Evicts Tenants With Drug History

CORPUS CHRISTI - Several tenants at a North Beach complex are staying somewhere else tonight, after they were evicted over the weekend.

It wasn't because they didn't pay the rent, but because of their criminal history.

The action from the homeowners' association at the Villa Del Sol complex is a strong response to a history of problems not only at its property, but throughout the neighborhood.

Over the last few decades, North Beach has developed as much a reputation for its crime as its culture, and sadly, most visitors figure that out pretty quickly.

Cathy Adams, visiting from Midland, says, "It didn't take me long here to realize that there was a concern for that. There were times that I felt a bit uneasy."

Villa Del Sol is the largest condominium complex in the area, with more than 400 rooms.

It is cleaning house to improve its image.

"Our message to any prostitutes, drug dealers: 'You are not welcome here,'" says newly elected homeowners association president Cheryl Martinez.

She and the rest of the board began performing background checks on problematic long term tenants.

Anyone with a history of drugs or prostitution was asked to leave by the owners of the units they were renting.

There are now five empty condos.

"And they've already been checking out," she says.

They apparently didn't fight their eviction.

"They didn't want any problems," she continues, "that's exactly what they said. They don't want any problems, especially the one that had a pretty bad charge, and they left."

Villa Del Sol also brought in an extra security guards and requested help from CCPD.

We need to make this property a place where people want to come with their families and stay," says Martinez, who owns two units at the complex herself.

"We want to make this is a property where investors want to invest."

She also hopes that her complex's action with serve as a catalyst for the rest of the complexes on North Beach, because they are not the only one with this type of problem.

CCPD has agreed to provide more patrolling in the area of Villa Del Sol, to assist residents in police themselves.
