CORPUS CHRISTI - A fire on the 7600 block of Weber destroyed RV's and campers this afternoon at the Weber Creek Storage facility but everyone involved seems to be OK.
"The first arriving officers described it as looking like Dante's inferno," said Corpus Christi Fire Department Captain James Brown.
Brown says the massive flames swallowed up several campers at the facility in a matter of minutes.
"Housing RV's and boats it was burning and there have been a significant number of them have burned," he said.
Brown also said the biggest complication for fire crews is that the nearest fire hydrant was hundreds of feet away. Firefighters had to use what's called "hose connections" to reach the blaze.
"A lot of hose," Captain Brown said, "we had to use a relay to get water to the units and to the actual scene and we had three trucks in that relay."
They hosed down the roaring flames and got the fire under control with a couple hours but not without help from Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.
"We were able to get a crash truck from NAS to bring in foam," Captain Brown said, "and that's the operation that they're conducting right now, going down the street spraying each individual unit with foam an d that's a little bit more effective than just using water alone."
The fire marshal is investigating the damage and, at this point, there's no telling how much was destroyed by this fire or how it started.
Management of the Weber Creek Storage encourages any customers concerned about their property to call the front desk for an update.
