BEEVILLE - A Beeville murder in December still has not been solved and now a scammer posing as a newspaper salesman has people on high alert. Bee-Picayune staff have been warning people in the Emma Finke Villa area to beware of the person going door-to-door trying to sell paper subscriptions. The company says a woman had someone come to her door around seven o'clock at night trying to do just that.

Cherie Woolever, who lives in the area, says she saw the guy going door-to-door. "I told him he's wasting time because we do not open doors mostly after night," she said.

It's not the fact that someone's out there trying to sell newspaper, though, that has people in the area spooked.

Woolever said, "We had a murder over here, Trueman Brown, and we've had people trying to break in since then."

The murder of 73-year-old Trueman Brown has shocked this normally quiet neighborhood. Police found him in his home with stab wounds in his back and abdomen several days before Christmas and have not, yet, arrested anyone.

"As long as the murderer hasn't been caught these people aren't at ease," said Olga Flores, a woman who's mother lives in the community. "They're scared so anybody who comes knocking on their door is going to scare them."

Woolever says most people now keep door jammers on their door knobs at night out of fear someone is going to break in.

"Very scary," Woolever said. "The murder was so useless because I don't know why anybody would be so ugly."

Police have offered $5,000 to whoever can give information that will lead to a murder arrest. In the meantime, however, people in this area are keeping their doors closed.
