New Underage Teen Drinking Tip Line that Pays You Money

CORPUS CHRISTI - Spring break is just around the corner, often a time associated with under age drinking. Tuesday the Corpus Christi Police Department began a trial program to help crack down on the under age drinking and if it works they could make it permanent.
Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers started an underage tip line to cut down on underage drinking. The tip line could earn you $250 for turning in an teen drinker, but the teen has to be charged for the crime before you get paid.
Senior Officer Kirk Stowers created the tip line after working a fatal accident involving an underage drunk driver.
"Unfortunately I had the unfortunate responsibility to deliver the death note notification and so this is something that really impacted me," say Sr. Officer Stowers.
18-year-old Michael Aguirre left a graduation party drunk when he killed 46-year-old David Garner in June 2011. Aguirre is serving 15 years for intoxication manslaughter.
Garner's family hopes this program prevents another family from losing a loved one to a teen drinker.
"My family feels and of course I share their view is that what Officer Stowers is doing is absolutely wonderful. Especially if it prevents at least one family from going through this because it was a horrible tragedy. And hopefully through his actions other cities will follow suit and we can get rid of this all together," says David Garner's sister Kathy Mehr.
The underage drinking tip line started Tuesday and police already received a handful of calls. The tip line will remain open through June 10th. If successful, Crime Stoppers will keep the tip line permanently.
