TEXAS - Some new state laws go into effect Tuesday and several of them have to do with driving.

A simple task like driving down the road could lead to a complicated situation if a driver is pulled over and given a ticket for something they didn't even know about.

"We're going to go about and do our business. There are just some clarifications on some of the laws that have changed and the provisions," CCPD's Michael McKinney said.

The "no cell phone in school zone" signs will cost the city $125,000 and are expected to be placed in school zones in the next coming years. Drivers will not have to worry about that one yet in Corpus Christi.

However, there are some others, like children under 8-years-old are required to be in a child safety seat. The child is exempt if he or she is at least 4 feet 9 inches tall.

"There's some stuff about DWI's. If there is a child or there is any injury where a person needs to seek medical attention, then we can take blood, whereas before, it had to be serious bodily injury or death," McKinney said.

Also for teenagers, the driving time for behind the wheel training will be changing from 14 hours to 34.

Drivers will also have to take the seat belts out of the seat cushions because starting Sept. 1 everyone, even people in the back seat, will have to have seat belts, not just people who are sitting in the front or people under 15.
