CORPUS CHRISTI - A new painkiller that hit the market last month is causing concern here in the Coastal Bend.
It's a new prescription drug called ZohydroER. The fear is it will be the next drug to make it to the streets causing a disastrous spike in overdoses and deaths.
Zohydro is a more potent form of Hydrocodone and it's effects last longer. With the deadly heroin and pain pill epidemic occurring in our city Captain David Cook who heads up the Police Department's Narcotics Division says the potential for abuse is real.
"Because our community has a significant problem with the abuse of prescription drugs. We deal with it every day," said Capt. Cook.
The effects of Hydrocodone are similar to heroin, and Zohydro contains 10 times more Hydrocone than other painkillers. According to a FBI report, the abuse of Zohydro has the potential of becoming the next major medical epidemic when it comes to substance abuse. Captain Cook agrees.
"Drug diversion, diverting prescription drugs for improper or illegal use is a big problem. And it's one of the biggest problems in the United States in regards to substance abuse," said Capt. Cook.
Because Zohydro is so new, CCPD hasn't seen a big problem with the drug being sold on the streets. But Captain Cook says it'll just be a matter of time before drug users get their hands on it.
