CORPUS CHRISTI - There are more than 25 million children in America who are growing up without fathers, that's one out of every three kids.
This weekend, a new program was introduced to the Corpus Christi area focused on reaching out those kids
It's a program that's sweeping the nation called Generation Outdoors and it's focused on getting fatherless kids off the computer, off the couch, and into the great outdoors.
"It was difficult," said Generation Outdoors leader Brandon Swank. "Getting taught to play baseball by your mother, or going to boy scouts and your mom's the only one there."
Swank knows first hand what it's like growing up without a father figure, and he's not the only one.
More than 40%of all children in America are growing up without their biological father.
"We went to register my daughter for school," he said. "And the first thing they asked was, ‘Are you the father?' and I was like "Is that really a question you have to ask?'"
That's why he and his wife decided to head up the first Generation Outdoors program in the Coastal Bend, out of Real Life Church in Flour Bluff.
"We're standing in the gap of fathers, from several different situations," said Generation Outdoors Director Scott Dahlstrom. "All the way from divorced homes, to dads who were just absent, to dads that are deceased or incarcerated. We also like to help with military families where dads are deployed."
Dahlstrom said the Coastal Bend is the perfect environment for the program.
"This area is so rich with resources," he said. "Between hunting, fishing, and surfing, to just playing on the water, the Hooks baseball team... You have so many outdoor activities, there's just a huge resource for that."
Swank and his wife said it's our responsibility as a community to reach out to these kids.
"People always look for somebody else to do it," said Hannah Swank. "Somebody else to take care of it, and it's not somebody else... it's us. We're there neighbors. We're their friends. We know them. We need to do it."
The program will be holding outdoors activities for fatherless kids every month, and you can find more information here.
