New Orleans Trips Up Men's Basketball, 70-62

CORPUS CHRISTI - Cory Dixon had 12 points and 16 rebounds, as New Orleans knocked off the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team 70-62 on Saturday night at the American Bank Center. The Privateers defense held the Islanders (9-12, 6-2 Southland) to 19-for-55 from the field and created 17 Islanders' turnovers.

John Jordan scored 20 points and dished out seven assists, but went just 8-for-16 at the free-throw line in the loss. Jake Kocher added 10 points and six steals - the most since Kevin Palmer had seven on Dec. 22, 2008, against Georgia - for the Islanders. Joy Williamson added 11 points as well.

Christavious Gill scored 19 points for the Privateers (7-9, 4-4) while Tradarrius McPhearson added 14 points. UNO committed 24 turnovers but outrebounded the Islanders 41-36 in earning the victory.
Early on, neither team could get much footing, with the Islanders pulling ahead on a jumper by Dale Francis at the 15:22 mark. But New Orleans got a three from James Harrison and followed it with a jumper from Cory Dixon to gather a 10-6 lead at the 13:46 mark. After the teams traded points, the Islanders went on a 4-0 run, with all four points coming from Williamson, to knot the game at 12-12.

After the Privateers pushed ahead 15-14, UNO went on a 5-0 rally to take its biggest lead of the game to that point. From there the teams went punch-for-punch before two free throws by Dixon made it 26-18. The Islanders were able to close the half on a 4-0 run, getting all four points at the line, to head to the locker room down 26-22.

Kevin Hill got UNO started with a bucket out of the break, but the Islanders scored the next four points to trim the lead to two. But the Privateers came back with a huge three-point play in transition from McPhearson after a block by Dixon to push the lead back to five. Slowly, the Privateers were able to push their lead to seven with 12:01 remaining.

But UNO then embarked on a 7-0 run, culminating with a three-point play for Isaac Mack that made it 45-31 with 10:13 remaining. But slowly, the Islanders were able to chip away, and got a huge steal from Jordan that turned into a Kocher layup to trim the deficit to six, 52-46. But UNO was able to take advantage of its repeated trips to the free-throw line, and held off a late Islanders charge that cut the lead to six en route to the 70-62 victory.
The Islanders will now take to the road for the next four games, starting with a matchup against Sam Houston State on Thursday night in Huntsville. Game time is slated for 7:45 p.m. Yannis Koutroupis will have the call starting at 7:30 with the pregame.
